Do You See What I Hear--memories of the heart
“Secret Keeper” Rhinestone Cowboy, Glen Campbell
I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway
Where hustle's the name of the game
And nice guys get washed away like the snow in the rain
As a child, I remember my father playing the guitar and singing this song. My father wasn’t always easy to know, and his behavior could be unpredictable. I gave the cowboy a rusted, beat-up heart, but it opens to become sparkling rhinestones. The contradictory, dirty heart and sparkling rhinestones represent my father’s unpredictable and complicated nature. He is a complex man— generous, and kind, but also angry and easily frustrated.
