“The Return” Wind Beneath my Wings, Bette Midler

It might have appeared to go unnoticed
But I've got it all here in my heart

A raven’s wings merge into the hair of the woman she perches upon, as if they are part of her. The woman’s heart is exposed and adorned with hand-knotted arteries made of thread, forming roots. The raven has a piece of the “root” in its beak; the heart no longer belongs solely to the woman.
While creating this piece, I thought about my various homes—the house I grew up in and then the subsequent ones I later created. I traveled far and lived in many places. Eventually, I settled down with my husband and raised our two children. I began to grow roots. These are the roots of my heart, encompassing the love for my family, friends, and community. This piece is about leaving, discovery, and settling in.
