“Mourning” Ave Maria, Franz Schubert

Nunc et in hora mortis
Now and in the hour of death

While in Mexico for Semana Santa, I heard Ave Maria sung by local choral groups. I witnessed a group of women in a parade wearing black lace mantillas. They each carried a candle that gave their face a strange orange glow. There was such beauty in their sadness and devotion that I tried to convey in this piece.
